BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Overfishing definition

Definition: Overfishing is when boats indiscriminately overfish using huge nets to take excessive amounts of fish. Size of fish taken in is disregarded, small juvenile fish are not returned to the sea that would have been able to grow to adult size and breed, increasing the fish population. Overfishing and lack of size discrimination leads to severe depletion of fish stocks.
