BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Particulates definition

Definition: Particulates are tiny solid particles released into the air when solid fuel is burned, they can be soot particles in smoke. When they land on a surface they collect and when you wipe your finger along the surface, it covers the fingertip with a coating of soot (carbon particles). Particulates can also be found in water, in a river you can get tiny stone particles or sand flowing along, making silt in the bottom, or in dust, you get microscopic particles which can't be seen clearly unless under a microscope.
