BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Phytoremediation definition

Definition: Phytoremediation is using plants to clean up pollutants. One example may be a radioactive rock near a river is spreading radiation underground, contaminating the river making the water unsafe to drink. So a specific plant is planted in between the rock and the river and its roots grow deep, absorbing the radiation. This stops it going into the river and the water is safe to drink again.
