BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Polyculture definition

Definition: A row of seedlings is planted with different species, this can be used in both agriculture and aquaculture. This can be beneficial for the species involved. A well-known example is maize, pea and squash grown together, all three species integrate well and benefit each other's growth. This can prevent insect damage, disease, and improve soil quality. This can in turn reduce the need for human intervention.
