Definition: Radioactive atoms have subatomic particles which decay (split away from the atom) but we are unable to predict when this will happen. This is rather like a bunch of balloons - one of them will burst but we have no way of knowing for sure when the next balloon will pop, or which one it will be. It is possible to plot this decay over time which gives us an idea when the next event will take place, but we can't know for sure because it's a random event.
