BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Runoff definition

Definition: Runoff is what happens when a farm has fertiliser being washed off its fields into a river or lake. There may be a lot of fertiliser being sprayed on the field, whether it be manually, or by plane. Chemical spraying is also a culprit for runoff. Rain washes the fertiliser or chemical off the crops and it runs off the land into a water body, polluting it and possibly leading to eutrophication.
