BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Terracing definition

Definition: Conventional farming methods cannot be used on hillsides or mountainsides because rainwater washes the soil down the slopes. One way of getting around this is making broad steps into the sides and terraces. Water is contained within the terraces, so crops that need water to grow in, like rice. Terraces also prevent soil erosion by containing the soil within.
