BSL Marine Species Glossary - Atlantic salmon - definition

Translation:

The right hand in the sign represents the salmon, and its upward movement illustrates the journey the salmon takes upstream. The left hand indicates where the salmon live, which is the Atlantic Ocean off the east coast of North America. Their large, streamlined bodies can grow up to 1.6 metres long and weigh more than 39 kilograms. Atlantic salmon are silver in colour with black spots. They live in the sea, but as they mature, the males develop a hooked jaw known as a kype. Both males and females return inland, swimming upstream along rivers, fighting against the current, jumping over rocks and shallow waters to reach their spawning grounds. Here, the females lay their eggs, and the males fertilise them. The eggs hatch, the young grow, and then they return downstream to the sea to complete their life cycle.
