BSL Marine Species Glossary - Common Prawn - definition

Translation:

The creature in this photograph is a Common Prawn. The Common Prawn is a translucent crustacean and one of a group of species that make up the Crustacean family. Growing up to 11cm long, it has a cylindrical body with brownish-red stripes and yellow-banded legs. Common Prawns have large eyes and a prominent spine which, along with its distinctive teeth, help differentiate it from other, similar looking, prawns. They inhabit rocky shores and rock pools where they feed off seaweed and animal remains. Common prawns can swim or walk using their numerous legs.
