BSL Marine Species Glossary - European Anchovy - definition

Hi there, I'm here at Falmouth Harbour where I'm going to talk about the European Anchovy. European Anchovies live in the seas around Europe and Africa. During the winter months they live at depths of between 200 to 400m; in warmer months they live closer to the surface, at around 50m. They have a slim body with a silver under belly with a blue, green or grey back and sides and a silver stripe along the side that fades with age. When threatened they swim more tightly together to form compact balls. European Anchovies feed on Zooplankton and fish eggs. They are migratory, moving northwards in the summer and southwards in the winter.
