BSL Marine Glossary - European Lobster - definition

Translation:

Hello, I'm here in Falmouth, Cornwall where, all around me, there is an incredible array of marine life. I'm going to tell you about the European Lobster which is found in the coastal waters of the UK, the Mediterranean and some parts of the Black Sea. European Lobsters can live for up to 50 years in the wild. They can grow up to 60cm in length and weigh 6kg. These lobsters have 2 claws, one of which is much larger than the other. The bigger, left, claw is the "Crusher" and is used to break things open; the smaller right one is called the "Pincer" and can make fine movements. With eyes mounted on stalks, the European Lobster has 360 degree vision which helps them stay fully aware of their surroundings. In the wild they are blue, but their bodies turn red when cooked. Because they are still very common, European Lobsters have low conservation status.
