BSL Marine Species Glossary - Fried Egg Jellyfish - definition

Translation:

Hi, I'm here on Flushing Beach in Cornwall. Fried Egg Jellyfish are round in shape and on average 40 cm wide (although they can be smaller - 17 cm). They have a floppy, bell shape which is white on the outside and bright orange in the middle; this is where the name comes - they look like a cracked egg! Fried Egg Jellyfish have short tentacles which are around 10 to 20 cm long. These tentacles have a sting which they use to catch plankton or small fish. Once they've caught their food, it is carried to the mouth by tiny hair-like structures on the tentacles to the mouth to be eaten. Fried Egg Jellyfish love warm water and are normally found in the Mediterranean. Mostly they are solitary creatures, but can be seen in groups when there is an abundance of food available. Fried Egg Jellyfish have a brief life span of between 4-6 months.
