BSL Marine Glossary - Greater Pipefish - definition

Translation:

Hi! I'm here in beautiful Cornwall. The Greater Pipefish is part of the same family as the seahorse, sharing a similar upturned snout and small mouth, but with a long, thin body rather than an upright one. It has a small hump behind the eyes, and its body is made up of segmented plates that alternate in colour from green to brown. Like the seahorse, the male broods the eggs in a groove and releases the young when they hatch.

Greater Pipefish live here on the southwest coast and in Wales but can live in the warmer waters of the Mediterranean. They are vulnerable because they live in shallow water where their habitat can be disturbed by people, and they also face a threat from overfishing.
