BSL Marine Species Glossary - Periwinkle - definition

Translation:

I'm in Flushing, Cornwall, standing on the rocks with the tide out which means we can find lots of different animals. What we have found are Periwinkle. Periwinkles live on the shoreline here on the rocks. They don't like to be dry; they prefer the water. Although they look similar to Land Snails, they are different. Periwinkles have a coiled shell with a pointed apex, they measure 3-5 cm. You find them in amongst the seaweed, or rocks nearer the shoreline and usually clumped together. Periwinkles are edible. Their shells have brown or grey bands. Periwinkles graze on algae on the rocks using a rasping tongue called a 'Radula'.
