BSL Marine Species Glossary - Plankton - definition

Translation:

Plankton are tiny organisms that are found in the sea, rivers and lakes. They can be either animals or plants, but can only be identified as such by looking at them under a microscope. Plankton cannot swim against the current - the direction they move in depends on the movement of the water that surrounds them. Plankton play an important role in maintaining the ecosystem; they are a food source for other marine species. Plankton is the general term we use for any of the tiny organisms that live in the water and that includes Zooplankton and Phytoplankton.
