The name of the creature in this photograph is the Spiny Starfish. These large, carnivorous starfish can range in size from 30-75cm! Pale greyish green to brown in colour, with purple arms tips, Spiny Shellfish have three longitudinal rows of spines on each of their five arms. These specialised structures are called 'Pedicellariae' and are used for hunting, defense and regeneration. Spiny Starfish are found on the western coasts of Britain and Ireland and in European waters. They feed on bivalves and other invertebrates.
