BSL Marine Species Glossary - Variegated Scallop - definition

Translation:

This is a photo of a Variegated Scallop. The sign is made up of two parts VARIEGATED / SCALLOP. With a ribbed shell, the Variegated Scallop comes in a variety of colours and patterns from which it derives its name. In size they are roughly the size of my palm and the shell opens up to allow it to feed. The Variegated Scallop anchors itself to rock seabeds from the low tide line to 80m deep with byssus threads, or it clamps itself to the base of kelp holdfasts (where the kelp attaches to the rock).
