How will you use what you have learned in this course?

Teaching blind student in nursery at present.
To be able to support and modify for the pupils I work with.
To support VI pupils.
To support our pupils who have little/ no vision.
I have used my braille skills to develop and support braille uses within school.
I have begun to shadow VI teachers in schools with the aim of working with visually impaired pupils and doing braille with them.
I am a visiting teacher (visual impairment) and so I will be needing to teach braille to pupils.
Supporting learners who are braille users.
Supporting young people to access their education.
I will use it to support the children in my school and also in our outreach service.
I work at the Royal Blind School, so braille is very relevant to my job.
To support the preparation and correction of braille materials for learners I support.
As part of daily work.
In my role as a teacher of the visually impaired.
Supporting pupils and advising colleagues.

What was best about the course?

Flexibility to work at your own pace.
The support of Dianne.
The course material supported my own learning.
Very interesting and enjoyable to learn. It was good how it gradually got harder and harder.
The help from Diane by email. I feel like I know her! The readings were cleverly built up so that you never got into bad habits using Grade 1 uncontracted words (they used the written word instead).
Practicing using the exercises produced. Feedback, and encouragement from tutor.
Timescales for completion of stages motivated me to complete work on time.
Very enjoyable and good tutor support.
There was lots of practical material.
Chance to do practical braille.
Step-by-step approach.
Improving my knowledge and helping me improve my confidence in my role.
Good pace despite running over holidays!

What, if anything, could have been improved?

Errors in coursework. I know this is being improved but it has caused confusion at times, eg number operations.
One to one support when learning.
Mistakes all the way through stages.
Mistakes in exercises.
Face contact and meeting other students would have supported my learning to a great depth.
There were a lot of error in the material in the course handout and this was therefore very confusing at times.
More practice for some of the rules – especially towards the end stages, where you would get lots of new signs and rules but no practice until there was a whole paragraph to braille out.
Some of the materials had errors in the braille which caused confusion at times. For all exercises to have a braille transcription for checking purposes.
There are some errors in the transcripts, which can be confusing.
The spacing out of assessments.
The transcription needs to be improved, there was a few mistakes.
One or two errors in practice materials.
Having all exercises transcribed, not just some. Have an online facility to practise with immediate or quick feedback.
Meeting other students. Some face-to-face time.

Any other comments regarding the course?

Thanks Diane for your positive encouragement and useful feedback.
Assessments marked quicker at times.
Assessment should be made quicker – especially towards the end – I feel I was ready to take the exam in July.
I think the amount of time to do the course in was a suitable time. I found that the final assessment time was not long enough.
I am pleased that more pages were added into the appendix to allow you to check your work because otherwise you didn’t know whether you were right or wrong.
Really useful and enjoyable (mostly!)
The feedback was detailed and helpful.
Very enjoyable although difficult at times.
Felt that some of the course explanations in the folder were confusing.
I would have preferred feedback quicker with some stages, 4 weeks window is too long.

Distance Learning

This course was delivered through distance learning - did you find this a good arrangement or would you have preferred a different mode of delivery? Please comment either way.

Yes – flexible. I supplemented the course with UEB online and Primer book - this was necessary for me as I needed extra practice.
I would have preferred one to one teaching.
Yes, maybe e-learning, like UEB.
Due to having to post assessments and the deadline day, I think there should be allowances for this, eg. give a couple of days extra for posting.
This suited me very well.
The distance learning worked for me. I could braille whenever it suited me. The distance learning only worked because we were able to email Diane though, because sometimes I wanted to clarify things.
Distance learning worked well – everything was supplied and my tutor was available if I needed support.
I could work at a time that suited me so yes this was a good arrangement.
Distance learning is a much better idea.
I would say this was a good arrangement because I work full time, so it was easy to fit in.
Distance learning was best for me.
Yes, liked distance learning.
I would have liked a couple of tutorials/face-to-face meetings for clarification and to have a deeper understanding.
Fine on the whole. Some direct input would have felt more supportive.

How did you hear about this course?

Co-ordinator/Line Manager: 10
Colleague: 3
SSC Website: 1
Other: 1 (Specialist Hearing Teacher)

What other SSC CPD training would you find useful?

Advanced braille for maths/science. More braillenote training.
I already attend some CPD training at the SSC and find it useful. The limiting factor is the cost.
Difficult to think of anything at this point! I would like to investigate teaching braille to learners more fully.
Is there any sensor play activities courses in sensory stories, or technology for children with CVI?
Anything VI/complex needs related.
