This is the first webinar in a series of five sessions focusing on Independent Living Skills (ILS) training for children and young people with visual impairment. Independent Living Skills cover a broad range of daily living tasks, which children and young people with visual impairment need support to develop, starting in the early years to build confidence and self-reliance. The first four sessions each focus on a different aspect of ILS - bedroom and household, personal care, money and shopping, and kitchen skills- highlighting their importance, age and stage-appropriate activities, adapted methods for performing tasks, and helpful resources. Session five will explore adaptations and strategies for children and young people with visual impairment and complex needs to help them be as independent as possible when performing daily living tasks.
Session 1 will focus on bedroom and household skills, providing helpful suggestions for activities and tasks suitable for early years, primary school, and secondary school students. Adapted and systematic methods for cleaning, changing the bed, organisation, and laundry will be demonstrated alongside helpful equipment and technology that can aid the performance of household tasks.
