VINCYP standards state that all children and young people with visual impairment should receive a Habilitation assessment of need carried out by a Qualified Habilitation Specialist (VINCYP Standard 8).
The Scottish Sensory Centre now offers a Habilitation service to support local authorities in Scotland to meet the needs of children and young people with visual impairment. This service is open to Local Authorities that do not currently have a Habilitation service, or require more support than their current service can provide.
The Scottish Sensory Centre's Habilitation Service can provide Habilitation assessments for all children and young people from 0 to 18 years of age with visual impairment, to determine their needs and make recommendations. This service can be delivered at home, in schools, or in the local community. The SSC's Qualified Habilitation Specialist can carry out environmental assessments of educational settings and provide risk assessments to support the safety of children and young people with visual impairment.
Habilitation involves mobility, orientation, and independent living skills training for children and young people with visual impairments. It is essential training that helps children or young people acquire the skills they need to be as independent as possible, access their environment, and participate in daily life experiences.
