BSL AI Glossary - Generative AI (GenAI) definition

Translation: There are different types of artificial intelligence (AI) systems, such as label‑assigning classification, Generative, and Predictive AI. If you ask an AI system to identify what an image shows and it responds, “This is a cat,” - that is not generative AI. This would instead be a label‑assigning classification system, because it is recognising and labelling images rather than creating new content.

But if you ask an AI system to create an image of a cat and it generates one, that is generative AI. Some AI systems create new content, while others do not. Generative AI can produce many types of content including text, images, video, audio, and music.
