BSL AI Glossary - Perception definition

Translation: Perception means — how does something NOTICE the world around it?

Perception in AI refers to the tools a computer uses to collect and interpret information, so it can understand the world, make decisions and take actions — just like you use your eyes and senses. You SEE someone's face and know if they're happy or angry. That is YOUR perception. AI does the same thing — but instead of eyes and ears, it uses CAMERAS, MICROPHONES, and SENSORS.

• "SEE" - AI uses a camera to look at photographs and videos
• "HEAR" - AI uses a microphone to listen to voices and sounds
• "READ" - AI reads text and understand the meaning
• "FEEL" - AI uses sensors to detect movement and touch

For example, Face ID on a phone - when it recognises your face and unlocks, that is AI perception. It SEES you, understands who you are, and reacts. Another example, subtitles or captions on a video - AI LISTENS to the sound and turns it into words you can read. That is AI perception.
