BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Canopy Layer definition

Description: Moving upwards from the Forest Floor, mature trees form an upper layer which is called the Canopy layer. This horizontal layer can be found at between 30 to 45 metres above the ground. Scientists estimate that globally, 50 % of all plant species are to be found in this part of the forest. There are also numerous types of insects. Many of the plants are 'Epiphytic' because they grow from the tree trunks or branches. The Canopy layer is also home to a wide variety of animals, for example, sloths, orangutans and many others.
