BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Carbon-rich soil definition

Description: Carbon-rich soil is soil that has a lot of carbon in it. The reason for this is because it is made up of organic material from dead plants and animals, which, when it decomposes, breaks down into carbon. Carbon-rich soils are found in peatlands where the ground is waterlogged; over time this organic material breaks down and results in the accumulation of carbon in the soil.
