Definition: Evolutionary, distinct and globally endangered species (EDGE) are those who are being wiped out. They need focused supported breeding programmes, so they need to be put on the endangered list because they may not be a well-known species and so may be overlooked. They may be rare, so being put on the endangered or protected list may encourage breeding and increase awareness of the species. These species may be keystone species, like agoutis for example which we have two here; they are related to guinea pigs. They are very much endangered in the wild in South America, so that's why it is important they have been put on the list, and here they can breed and increase their numbers.
