BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Emergent Layer definition

Description: The Emergent layer sits above the Forest canopy. Only a few trees grow to this height, which is typically 45 to 55 metres, but this can extend to 70 to 80 metres. Life in the Emergent layer has to be able to cope with intense heat and fierce winds. Despite this, there are animals that live up here, for example eagles, butterflies, bats and some species of monkey.
