Definition: Eradication is the reduction of the population of a species by removal or culling.
Eradication programmes have been carried out on many islands. For example, rats on the Scilly Isles (south of England) destroyed the nests of ground-nesting birds. These rats were brought to these islands years ago and the population expanded. The eradication programme culled/killed 3000 rats, and this helped the survival of native ground-nesting birds (Manx Shearwater and Storm Petrel).
