BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Forest Floor definition

Description: The Forest floor is one of the vertical layers of the forest. This part of the forest is very dark and damp. At the very top of the forest the trees have access to 100% of the sunlight, but this decreases further down to the point where only 2% of the sun's light reaches the forest floor. Here there are layers of rotting, organic material because there are lots of fungi. The Forest Floor contains few plants and only those that have adapted to the damp environment and low levels of sunlight.
