This is where conservation takes place in an animal species' natural habitat. The original natural habitat has been damaged so the decision is made to improve the area by replanting trees and plants, encouraging regrowth and improvement of the area. Here we have done this for the red squirrel. This area was not at its best so we planted new trees and encouraged regrowth of the woodlands. This in turn attracted red squirrels and they started to prosper here. See one up there!
So we finally have red squirrels here, our beautiful native squirrel, my favourite. The grey American squirrels that were brought here 150 years ago, took over the red squirrels’ habitats and overran them. We have been trying to discourage the grey squirrels and rather concentrating our efforts on encouraging the growth of the red squirrels and improving their preferred habitats here in Scotland.
