BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Jet Stream definition

Description: Jet Streams are narrow, fast moving ribbons of air that circle the globe from west to east at speeds of over 200mph. They influence temperature, rainfall and storm patterns. Jet streams operate in the Earth's atmosphere where the troposphere meets the stratosphere. They form as warm air at the equator rises and is drawn to cold air at the poles. These temperature differences combine with the Earth's rotation to form jet streams.
