Description: There are a number of different ways of retaining moisture in the soil and/or replenishing it. When it's dry, the surface of the land can become so hard that rainfall won't permeate it. People have thought long and hard about how best to solve this problem and to find ways to try to prevent the soil from drying out. A solution that is sometimes used is to install a pipe, vertically into the ground, which is then filled with water from a nearby reservoir or river. The pipe has holes drilled into it so that the water seeps into the soil at different levels; this then softens the surface so that when it rains, water can percolate into the soil. Sometimes the pipe itself is used to store water, which is then drawn to the surface and used to irrigate the soil. Pipes can also be laid on top of fields and then attached to sprinklers that water the surface. There are many ways land rehydration can be achieved.
