BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Organic Matter definition

Description: When plants wilt and die, they fall to the ground and decompose. The same happens to animals - when they die, their bodies decompose in the soil. Over time this decomposing matter builds up in layers and is added to by animal faeces. These deposits contain high concentrations of carbon and are an important part of the carbon cycle.
