BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Positive NAO Phase definition

Description: Positive NAO phase occurs when there is a strong pressure difference between two points. In this phase atmospheric pressure near the Azores (Portugal) is high normal and low normal near Iceland. The result is strong westerly winds with the Jet Stream pushing storms and rain towards the UK. This affects UK weather making the temperature milder and wetter with frequent storms, a higher risk of flooding and less snow.
