BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Sponge Garden definition

Description: Climate Change is resulting in more extreme weather - we're experiencing more heatwaves, the ground is getting drier and the risk of flooding is increasing. Sponge gardens are planted in ways that help control the flow of excess water by absorbing it in the same way as a sponge does. By trapping excess water the ground retains more moisture, which also reduces the risk of fire. Hard surfaces, like concrete, create run off when it rains which leads to flooding. Planting sponge gardens is one way of managing water in a more sustainable way.
