BSL Environmental Science Glossary - Vapour definition

Description: Water in its liquid state stays the same at standard temperatures, but when the temperature rises it changes to a gaseous state (vapour) and evaporates into the air. This can also happen to water that is frozen (i.e. in its solid state). As the temperature rises, frozen water melts and collects as a liquid; if the temperature continues to rise the water will evaporate. An example of this is pouring water onto a plate - if left inside, where it's cooler, the water remains in its liquid state, but if taken outside and exposed to the sun, as it heats up the water will change into a vapour and evaporate upwards into the atmosphere.
