BSL Marine Species Glossary - Barnacles - definition

Translation:

You see Barnacles everywhere, mostly on hard surfaces. They have what looks like a tiny eye and a hard shell, like a crab or lobster (Barnacles are a part of the same family). It doesn't look like it, but there's an animal inside which comes out when the tide comes back in. Once it's covered by the sea, the shell opens and these feathery tentacles emerge and start to feed, filtering out tiny creatures called Plankton. Barnacles stay in one place, they don't move. They release their larvae into the water which then find their own permanent home. Barnacles aren't just found on rocks, they attach themselves to boats, whales and turtles and they're very hard to get off.
