BSL Marine Species Glossary - Barracuda - definition

Translation:

Hello, I'm here in Falmouth, Cornwall. Today I'm going to talk to you about one of the animals found in the sea - it's called the Barracuda. Barracudas are predatory, ray-finned fish that are found all over the world in warm and tropical seas. They are 1.2-1.6m long and have thin, streamlined bodies. Barracudas are mostly found in coastal areas near coral reefs, at depths of up to 100m. They don't live with other Barracudas, but are solitary creatures. With a snake-like body they can reach speeds of up to 58kph. They have a large mouth with sharp, blade-like teeth and use really fast, short movements to surprise their prey. Barracudas eat small fish and crustaceans. They face threats from over-fishing and the habitat destruction of coral reefs. Their Conservation Status is 'less concern', but it's still important to protect them.
