BSL Marine Species Glossary - Cuttlefish - definition

Translation:

I'm here in beautiful Cornwall. Cuttlefish. Today, while walking on the beach here, I found this. It's an old one and it's the bones from the inside of a Cuttlefish. It's made of Calcium which provides buoyancy and helps the Cuttlefish move. There are over 100 different species of Cuttlefish. They average around 50 cm in length and typically weigh about 4kg. This one is about average. The Cuttlefish's body ripples as it moves and they can change colour with the environment. When it's time to mate the male will change colour to something calming, to show the female that he's a good choice. When threatened by predators, the Cuttlefish will change to a more aggressive colour and extend their fins in an effort to deter them. Often, on beaches like this, you can see Cuttlefish bones washed up on the sand which gives an indication of how common they are here in Britain.
