BSL Marine Species Glossary - Moon jellyfish - definition

Translation:

The creature in the picture is a moon jellyfish. They are very common in UK waters and easily recognised by a curved, bell-shaped body with tentacles hanging below. Moon Jellyfish cannot swim against the current or choose a direction – they simply drift with the ocean's movements. Moon Jellyfish are about 25cm wide with short tentacles that have specialised stinging cells, which help them to catch prey and defend themselves. On their bell they have four horseshoe-shaped reproductive organs, violet-blue in colour. Their reproductive cycle is interesting. They start life as tiny, stationary polyps attached to rocks, where they feed and grow. When ready, these polyps release baby jellyfish into the water - meaning they don't enter the sea fully formed, but begin life anchored to a rock surface.
