The photograph you can see here is of a Purple Sea Urchin. They can be found in Eastern Europe and Africa at depths of between 1-20m. Purple Sea Urchins live on rocky seabeds, in seagrass meadows and can grow up to 7cm in diameter with the females being larger than the males. These creatures have a dark green or purple shell. They're covered in sharp spines which help them move, but also protect them from predators. Purple Sea Urchins eat algae and help maintain the balance of underwater ecosystems. Some of these urchins can live for over 70 years and are one of the longest-lived sea creatures. Purple Sea Urchins are edible and are eaten by people in Italy, France, Spain and Greece
