BSL Marine Species Glossary - Razor Shell - definition


Translation:

The sign for the creature in the picture is Razor Shell. Razor shells are long, narrow and thin and look like the old-fashioned straight razors - hence the name. They are found all around the coastal waters of Britain and live in the sand (not on rock). When submerged they sit vertically, poking up above the sand. They feed on microorganisms called Plankton and can grow up to 20 cm in length. After a storm they can often be found on beaches. Let me show you one ...

This is a Razor Shell - the sign Razor Shell is based on how they sit vertically with this much, the head, (although it doesn't have a 'head' as such) above the sand. When we find them in shallow water like this, they're usually dead but in deeper water they're alive. This one is alive though.
