Whelks live in places like this, which are known as 'Sub Tidal'. They can be found on rocks like these but spend most of their time underwater from the shoreline down to around 1200m! Whelks have a coiled shell with about 7 or 8 whorls. They have a hard outer shell and a soft inner body. With a powerful, single foot it can glide over the seabed. Whelks eat marine animals like crabs, or worms. They have a tube that is powerful enough to drill into their prey. Whelks are found here in Britain, (there are lots of them around me) and in America along the North Atlantic coast, but not in the Mediterranean.
