Overview:

During the presentation Sue explained what nystagmus is, the many potential causes and other associated medical and genetic conditions, how it affects the sight, the functional vision and general wellbeing. She explored how it manifests itself differently from one child to another and how the vision may vary from one day to the next. Sue also referenced the social and emotional aspects of nystagmus and the potential impact on behaviour.

We discussed why a child with nystagmus needs additional support to access learning and the various forms this support might take.

The support and resources available to teaching and other school staff were signposted in the context of the work of the charity in supporting the nystagmus community and raising awareness.

Finally, Sue referred briefly to recent and current research on nystagmus and reading.
