Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD):

Interventions within and beyond Deaf CAMHS*

Presented on Thursday 9th March 2023

Content

This webinar followed on from our Deafness and Autism session held in December 2022. We focussed on some typical recommendations and interventions that a young person may receive from Deaf CAMHS* following a diagnosis of ASD.

The main focus for the webinar was a presentation of the Deaf CAMHS North GLAD group – Group Learning Autism Deafness. This is an online group for parents with deaf children who have a diagnosis of ASD. The content and structure of the group was discussed along with feedback from recent attendees.

There was also a discussion about other interventions that may be recommended, some external to Deaf CAMHS.

As integral members of the Autism Assessment Team, Emma and Rebecca discussed a variety of interventions for Deaf children. They shared insights from their group work with parents of Deaf children with ASD and discuss how parental feedback has shaped their processes.

Emma and Rebecca discussed how the Deaf CAMHS team work with schools to implement diagnostic report recommendations. The aim was that attendees left the session with improved understanding of what young Deaf people with autism need and where their professional role fits in to their support system.

*CAMHS stands for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services and is the name for the NHS services that assess and treat young people with emotional, behavioural or mental health difficulties.
