What was best about the session?

Hands on experience with the assessments.
Shown the different assessments.
Learning about the resources and having a go. Chatting with others about the role.
Speaking with others about how they write reports.
Discussion on what to look for when completing a pupil observation.
Seeing the actual assessments and getting a chance to try them.
Practical ideas.
Materials (FVA).
Hands on experience with leading practitioner.
Seeing the different testing materials.
Meeting a wide variety of non qualified and qualified teachers of VI and hearing how the job role works in different authorities. Helped increase my understanding about and confidence in carrying out functional vision assessments.
Great to get a better understanding of a variety of different tests as well as getting hands on experience.
Refreshing practitioner knowledge.
Able to see various test materials.
It was all very useful and informative. I learned key points that I didn't realise, for example newsprint to Arial size and key points for conducting assessments properly.
Hearing about the 3 steps involved in an FVA not just the assessment part.
DISCCS reminder. Opportunity to see other assessments that are used outwith my setting.
Practical, down to earth and knowledge that I can use straight away.

What, if anything, do you think should have been included?

Examples of report writing.
More assessment resources to trial.
Maybe having a list with the names of the distance, near, contrast etc assessments?
More guidance on conducting the tests and feedback on your testing skills.
It would be good to have a further course on assessment of children with complex needs.
We discussed more at the end but what I was finding difficult was to summarise what the assessment tells me and how to phrase this into helpful strategies to report to parents and teachers.
Maybe on a different day, but assessing children with complex needs and infants.
Think it was pretty comprehensive with key points made.
Nothing more or N/A (5)
Not sure (2)
All good.

What other CPD training would you like the SSC to provide?

Setting meaningful targets.
It would be good to have a further course on assessment of children with complex needs.
Could report writing examples be included? For example a case study and then writing most important recommendations and results from FVA. I appreciate report writing may vary across different authorities, but this could be a good way of developing a consistent approach.
Screen reading and Braillesense input which I believe is already being undertaken.
